Volunteer Opportunities
SARSSM is able to meet its mission of providing a proactive and reactive approach to sexual violence through the efforts and compassion of our many wonderful volunteers. For thirty years, volunteers have played a central role in helping us to deliver services to sexual assault survivors and to help our agency flourish. The following is a listing of volunteer opportunities at SARSSM available to the public. For more information, call us at 1-800-313-9900 or email us at
.
HOTLINE ADVOCATE:
Volunteer from your home! Attend a free, 42-hour Sexual Assault Advocacy Training to learn about the dynamics of sexual assault and effective intervention. Topics include: acquaintance/date rape, crisis intervention, domestic violence, HIV/AIDS education, legal and medical protocols, and more. In addition to providing support and information to survivors and caring others on the hotline, you will also have the opportunity to provide in-person support to survivors and those who support them at local hospitals, police departments, and courts. There are flexible shifts to fit your schedule. You must have reliable transportation. Training classes are held 2 times per year (usually late Winter and early Fall). Click here to view our Hotline Advocate Training Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) page.
Next Training: October 2008

BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEMBER:
Help chart the course for SARSSM in the new millennium! The Board meets monthly to ensure the financial health of the agency, community awareness, and quality assurance. Members serve on committees that best suit their talents and interests. They are: Fund Raising, Community Relations, Finance, Personnel, Nominating, and various ad hoc committees. Please email us for an application packet.
CHOCOLATE LOVER'S FLING PLANNING COMMITTEE MEMBER:
Our annual fundraiser. Community members pay $20 for an all-you-can-eat smorgasbord of the best chocolate treats from bakers and restaurateurs across York and Cumberland counties! This event, which attracts over 1,000 guests each year, is our largest fundraiser and as such requires a great deal of volunteer involvement. There are many ways to be involved. Work on cutting and/or serving chocolate, securing donations for the auction, creating art work and the ad book, and so much more. By volunteering, you attend the event for FREE!
Next Fling: April 6, 2008

TAKE BACK THE NIGHT MARCH & RALLY PLANNING COMMITTEE:
Across the county, April is recognized as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. For the past 24 years, SARSSM and other community partners have worked to raise awareness and visibility by sponsoring a Take Back The Night March and Rally in Portland. Take Back The Night, which originated in Frankfurt, Germany, is a night of inspiration, healing, a re-commitment to ending sexual and domestic violence, and an important historical event. As a member of the TBTN Committee, you can work with the media, organize speakers for the event, assist in obtaining permits, help with art work and signs, and many more fun projects for this meaningful event.
Next Take Back The Night Event: Friday, April 25, 2008.

ADMINISTRATIVE:
Come to our Portland office and work with staff to prepare materials for survivors, trainings, and/or local human service agencies. Help identify resources for victims and research information for training & legislation. We also need assistance with mailings, word processing, filing, data entry, and other administrative tasks.
If you don't see anything for you on this list of possibilities, come by and we'll do a "designer" volunteer session to see how your unique talents and skills can be utilized in a volunteer capacity.

INTERNSHIP OPPORTUNITIES:
Every year, SARSSM offers a limited number of internship opportunities to local undergraduate and graduate students. As a SARSSM intern, you will be empowered to help create your own field of interest and pursue it. Recent interns have helped SARSSM foster a better relationship with the immigrant/refugee community, have organized support groups, and have worked to forge a better link with domestic violence agencies to better serve DV victims who have also been sexually assaulted. SARSSM interns also take our 42-hour training and take hotline shifts during their tenure as an intern.
