Confidentiality &
Mandated Reporting

We have strict confidentiality policies. Your privacy and safety are our biggest priorities. We will keep anything you tell us confidential. We will not share your information with anyone outside of SARSSM unless you give us written permission to do so.

There are some exceptions to our confidentiality. This includes our role as mandated reporters. We are happy to answer your questions about our reporting obligations. We also commit to telling a client ahead of time about our need to report if we can.

What is a mandated reporter?
A mandated reporter is an adult who the law requires to report to Maine Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) if they know or suspect that a minor or other vulnerable person may be experiencing abuse or neglect. In Maine, a ‘minor’ is anyone under 18 years old. A ‘vulnerable person’ is any incapacitated or dependent adult.

What happens after a report?
If we suspect or know a minor or vulnerable adult is being abused, we are only required to report to DHHS. We will not tell any other authorities, parents, or guardians.  DHHS may choose to open an investigation. SART Advocates can give you more information on the DHHS investigation process.

How can I get help if I am afraid that a mandatory report may be made?
You can call our 24-hour helpline for support anytime. Callers do not have to  tell us their full name, address or other identifying information. That way, you can limit what you share or remain anonymous.  Without these identifying details, we cannot make a mandatory report.
