Volunteer with SARSSM

We are currently recruiting for volunteer helpline advocates!

Are you searching for a meaningful volunteer opportunity?

For over forty years, SARSSM's mission to support survivors of sexual violence has been made possible with the support of our dedicated and trained volunteers!  We hope that you will consider joining us!

Contact our Volunteer Coordinator at volunteer@sarssm.org

Here are some ways that you can get involved:

volunteer Helpline Advocates
SARSSM's Volunteer Advocates answer calls on SARSSM's 24-hour crisis and support helpline, serving survivors in York and Cumberland Counties.   They also provide accompaniments to hospitals and police departments, as requested, throughout Southern Maine.

Volunteer Advocates undergo a comprehensive 40-hour 'Help and Healing' training program to prepare them for helpline calls and accompaniments.
Once trained, they can sign up for daytime or evening shifts as their schedule allows and take calls from their own home.  This volunteer support substantially increases SARSSM's capacity to respond to crisis and support calls.

SARSSM offers multiple layers of support for our Volunteer Advocates, including having a dedicated Volunteer Coordinator who is available as a resource,  providing ongoing trainings, and opportunities for peer support through a monthly Volunteer Advocate meeting.  Each helpline shift also has two layers of on-call staff available to support our frontline volunteers.

Benefits include:
  • Making a real difference in the lives of survivors, and meeting peers who are passionate about ending sexual violence
  • Volunteer remotely
  • Flexible and advanced scheduling, making it easy for you to plan ahead
  • Gaining experience and building your resume
  • Opportunity to be compensated
