Maine Department of Education’s 2018 Child Sexual Abuse Prevention & Response Model Policy

Maine’s Public Law 20-A MRS §254, sub-§18 requires that all schools in Maine with public pre-K through grade 5 programs have a written policy for child sexual abuse prevention education and response. In 2018, the Maine Department of Education (DOE) created a Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Education and Response Model Policy to support schools in implementing effective child sexual abuse prevention policies.

In support of these efforts, the Maine Coalition Against Sexual Assault developed the Children’s Safety Partnership (CSP) - an online toolkit with information for parents, teachers, administrators, schools, and communities for implementing Maine’s law, and responding to and preventing child sexual abuse. This work was done in collaboration with the Maine DOE, local sexual assault service providers, and schools across the state.  

Local sexual assault service providers, such as SARSSM, serve as members of the Children’s Safety Partnership, and assist with making CSP resources available on the ground within our local communities. SARSSM serves as the point of contact for schools in York and Cumberland Counties.
